Healthcare organizations deploying AI, education institutions adopting AI, and government entities and nonprofits requiring community-centered AI approaches are all faced with mounting pressure, unprecedented challenges, and limited resources. I believe AI should serve the communities that built it (through their data) and not the other way around. I have supported the communities most vulnerable for most of my life. As AI advances, we must position our service organizations to leverage its benefits while defending against its harms.
My Unique Community Engagement Approach to AI:
- Stakeholder Engagement Design: Facilitate sessions that bring together diverse voices (employees, customers, community members) to inform AI strategy that ensures decisions reflect values beyond efficiency and profit
- Equity Impact Assessments: Guide organizations in evaluating how AI systems affect different populations (by race/ethnicity, disability, socioeconomic status, neurodiversity); EI Assessments are rooted in my research on AI's differential impacts on human experiences, preventing harm before it happens*
- Community Feedback Integration: Design processes for ongoing community input into AI governance decisions, building trust and accountability mechanisms that prevent harm (for example, building programs and roadmaps, earned by companies, organizations, or employees that are committed to the mindset, heartset, and skillset that aligns with human-centered AI integration across their organizations).
