This phrase/question pops in my head when I sit down to write for my blog on my website or my next linkedin post. I’m sure many of you have been there as well.

Writing to the Algorithm
Social media platforms are engineered to surface content that performs. So hooks, controversy, brevity, emotional resonance must occur in the first three seconds. We have to have a clear call to action, develop a consistent posting schedule, and write about trending topics. While I consider these factors just the cost of living in modern times, there is a tension between algorithms and authenticity. It requires energy to show up authentically and it costs time to think carefully, as we write and edit our thoughts for clicks instead of quality. AI content tools have compounded this dilemma. They generate posts, suggest hooks, optimize for engagement, and analyze what's working. Though useful, we find ourselves leaning more towards algorithm mindsets.

What Gets Lost
In writing this way, we lose insights and perspectives that don't fit neatly into the latest trending topics. We lose our unique voices amongst the sea of other algorithm voices vying for engagement in less than 150 words.

The Balance I'm Still Working Out
Rejecting the algorithm entirely is not realistic for an organization trying to build a professional presence or anyone trying to grow a business. But I do think we must all be intentional about what we’re optimizing through AI.  Personally, I like to write ((poems, short stories, essays, nerd strategies lol) and believe what I have to say is important to share. So, I use AI to sharpen my words or develop a catchy title, but the idea and perspective is all mine. We have to be mindful when it comes to optimizing, to ensure we don’t optimize the one thing the algorithm can’t do and that’s be human.
